New Delhi, Jan 27 (KNN) With a view to promoting people-to-people contacts, Japan has announced short-term multiple entry visas for Indians to promote educational and academia exchanges.

According to a senior official in the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s administration, Indians can now get a three-year visa with multiple entries to visit Japan.

Abe yesterday participated in the Republic Day parade as a chief guest.  He is the first Japanese Prime Minister to be the chief guest at India's Republic Day celebrations and marvel at India's military might showcased at the event.

“There will be multiple-entry visas, which will last up to three years, for Indian ordinary passport holders,” Japan foreign ministry’s Press secretary Kuni Sato said.

Presently, Indian tourists can get only single-entry visas to Japan for short duration. However, Indian visitors to the US, UK get up to 10-year visas. This visa relaxation was made by Tokyo since Japanese tourists get visas-on-arrival to India.

Sato also said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was briefed about the regional situation, including China’s activities, by Abe.

“India and Japan expect China to act as a responsible partner in the comity of nations, because it is a fact that China has been building up militarily and not necessarily with enough transparency,” she said.

Also, Japan on Saturday had announced 200 billion yen (USD 1.95 bn) in new loans for extension of the Delhi Metro and two other projects.  Both sides inked eight agreements, including on boosting tourism.

According to the joint statement released at the end of talks, two leaders welcomed the expansion of the bilateral currency swap arrangement to USD 50 billion from USD 15 billion and signing of a contract for its entry into force in January this year.

The Japanese PM assured that his country is interested in working with India in the areas of technology and human resources. (KNN/SD)
