Japanese firm UNIQLO to source garments from India; Co chief calls on PM

New Delhi, Jun 25 (KNN)  UNIQLO, a leading Japanese garment company, aims to source garments from India which has built capabilities across different segments of the value chain of the textile industry. Company Chairman Tadashi Yanai today met Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveying his company's intentions to source apparels from India.

“Tadashi Yanai, the Chairman of UNIQLO, a leading Japanese garment company, called on the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi today. The company aims to source garments from India,” a statement from the PMO said.  

During the meeting, the Prime Minister welcomed Yanai’s interest in developing UNIQLO’s business in India, and “highlighted the advantages that India enjoys in the garments sector, including availability of cotton, skilled manpower, robust infrastructure, a big domestic market and good ports for exports.”

The US and the European Union have so far been dominating the markets for Indian apparels.  Japanese interest in the Indian apparel industry augurs for the textile sector that is expected to log in exports worth USD 50 billion. The sector is among the largest employers of skilled workers.  (KNN Bureau)
