Piyush Goyal Inaugurates 89th IEC General Meeting, Emphasises Quality Manufacturing Standards
New Delhi, Sep 15 (KNN) Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal inaugurated the 89th International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) General Meeting, held from 15 to 19 September at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.
He highlighted that high-quality manufacturing standards help reduce costs, promote safety, encourage reusability and sustainability, and enhance India’s global competitiveness.
The meeting brings together over 2,000 experts from more than 100 countries to discuss international standards aimed at fostering a sustainable, all-electric, and connected world.
The event features India’s largest electrotechnical exhibition showcasing innovations in electric mobility, smart lighting, electronics, and IT manufacturing, providing a global networking platform for Indian start-ups. India also serves as the Global Secretariat for Standardisation in Low Voltage Direct Current (LVDC), critical for clean energy solutions.
IEC Vice President Vimal Mahendru noted that IEC membership spans 170 countries covering 99 percent of the global population and influencing nearly 20 percent of international trade.
Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Director General Pramod Kumar Tiwari emphasised integrating quality and standardisation with academia through internships and student chapters, while 93 young professionals participate in the IEC Young Professionals Programme.
The General Meeting will include over 150 Technical and Management Committee meetings and workshops covering sustainability, AI, e-mobility, and inclusive standards development.
The IEC GM Exhibition, open from 16 to 19 September, will host 75 exhibitors and is accessible to the public through prior registration at gm2025.iec.ch.
