New Delhi, Apr 12 (KNN)  Internet users in Ghana and Nigeria now enjoy the access of cloud based applications through their web browsers or mobile apps, owing to mobile telecommunications operator MTN that went live on Wednesday.

The range of cloud computing services was specifically meant for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).   It involves the delivery of computing resources over the internet while software and data required for the programmes are stored on remote servers, according to an AllAfrica media report.

Launches in Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, South Africa and Uganda are likely to follow later this year.

“MTN launched cloud pilot project in Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda and South Africa in December, becoming the first mobile network operator in Africa to adopt he cloud service brokerage model, in which access to services is centralised, with MTN in this case acting as the single point of contact for customers,” the report stated.

How would the businesses benefit?  The focus according to the operator is on conveniences, as centralising access to services eases the administrative burden for businesses where instead of dealing with multiple service provides, they just have to deal with one.

All indications point to the pilot project being on the mark. “There is a great appetite for information and communications technology solutions that are relevant, customised and affordable.  SMEs are looking to technology service providers such as MTN to bring them world class tools that improve their business efficiencies.  MTN Cloud offers exactly that,” Executive of MTN’s group enterprise business unit, Farhad Khan said.

Among the impressive list of services MTN cloud offers are access of Office Desktop, email and collaborative software, Mozypro – a backup service for effective management of files and servers and Dialcom - an on-demand video conferencing, McAfee – an antivirus and anti-spam security software, Averiware – used for HR, accounting, finance and salesforce automation needs and Microsoft SharePoint – a staff and cross functional collaborative too, in addition to Microsoft CRM – a customer relations management tool.

MTN is optimistic about their offering.  Their focus remains on the development of enterprises and the sustainable growth of economies, even as they acknowledge the fact that SMEs are the key economic growth drives in most markets.

Currently business customers have received a 30 day trial after which they can opt to subscribe to MTN cloud. (KNN)
