Trump Threatens Additional Tariffs On BRICS Nations As Bloc Criticises US Trade Policies
New Delhi, Jul 7 (KNN) President Donald Trump announced Sunday that he would impose an additional 10 percent tariff on nations aligning with BRICS policies, escalating trade tensions with the 11-member bloc that includes major economies Brazil, Russia, India, and China.
Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated that any country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS, will be charged an additional 10 per cent Tariff with no exceptions to the policy.
The threat came as BRICS leaders gathered for their two-day summit, where they criticised what they termed ‘indiscriminate’ US import tariffs.
The emerging nations bloc, which accounts for approximately half the world's population and 40 percent of global economic output, found common ground in opposing US trade policies despite internal divisions on other issues.
In their summit declaration, BRICS members expressed ‘serious concerns’ about rising tariffs that they characterised as ‘inconsistent with World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules.’
The group argued that such trade restrictions threaten to reduce global trade, disrupt global supply chains, and introduce uncertainty into the global economy, though they avoided directly naming Trump in their criticism.
This selective approach to addressing international conflicts highlighted the complex dynamics within the BRICS alliance as it seeks to position itself as an alternative to Western-led international institutions.
