Gurgaon, Sept 21 (KNN)  With 25 Community Colleges, 150 SMART Centres and Skill Camps spread across 20 states, the Apparel Training and Design Centre (ATDC) is the country's largest vocational training network that caters to the apparel sector.

With significant presence in major apparel clusters, ATDC provides skilled workforce for the export and domestic sector of the apparel industry to improve quality, productivity and efficiency in a global context.

Significant among ATDC’s objectives is to provide skilled manpower to the industry in order to improve the technological edge in manufacturing as per international parameters.  Towards this, it offers certificate, diploma and associate degree programmes.

It also strives to generate employment opportunities to the weaker sections of the society by providing them training in the field of apparel making and allied areas.

Wherever possible, it endeavours to upgrade the technical skills and competencies for the human resources employed in the garment industry.

Needless to say, to make domestically produced garments fit for sale abroad, they are required to pass various tests.  The labs test garments on various parameters like fabric's strength, colour durability, thickness, GSM balance (weight for hosiery products), bursting test for knit products, crock metre test and others.

Specially designed equipment in the lab will help conduct those quality control tests.   ATDC has therefore called for bids to supply textile lab equipment.

According to reports ATDC Indore will soon have two labs with dry and wet processes.  With the setting up of the two state of the art textile laboratories, the export potential of readymade garments' sectors of the region is likely to get a major boost.

With the help of those labs, ATDC Indore would impart training to prepare quality control professionals for the textile sector.  The move is likely to boost export-centric manufacturing of apparels and offer vocational options for professionals in the area.  The labs will be functional this month.

With regard to community colleges, ATDC had tied up with IGNOU to set up 25 such colleges which focus on employability in the sector. These colleges provide a range of skills for the “fibre to fashion” chain offering suggested pathways that lead to graduation and technical skills.  Thus far, around 2500 candidates have enrolled since the programme commenced in January 2010.  The curriculum followed has been customised to the needs of the apparel industry.

Modules covered in the Community Colleges are Apparel Manufacturing, Fashion Design; Apparel Pattern Making and CAD, Apparel Quality Assurance and Compliance, Apparel Manufacturing Technology, Fashion Design Technology and Knitwear Manufacturing Technology, Apparel Export Merchandising, Production Supervision and Quality Control, among others.  Customised programmes are also offered in computer aided design (pattern making), computer aided design (merchandising manager), computer aided design (fashion studio) and garment construction techniques.

As far as the ATDC Smart Centres are concerned, their focus is to provide trainees with skills for “employability” and help the apparel industry with a pool of skilled and certified workforce to improve competitiveness through better quality, efficiency and productivity.

SMART (Skills for manufacturing of Apparels through Research and Training) is an ATDC training project under the Integrated Skill Development Scheme, Ministry of Textiles, GOI.  On its agenda is to provide the industry with Ready Skilled Workforce according to the core requirements of the garment industry located in various manufacturing centres across India.

SMART training project aims to impart basic skills to the new entrants and up skilling the existing skill sets of the present work force to bridge the skill gaps and meet the industry requirements. Its short term customised programmes include - SMART Operator (Basic), SMART Operator (Advanced), SMART Finishers and Packers, Quality Checker, Machine Technician and SMART Surface Ornamentation, etc.

The state governments of Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Odisha offer support in the form of stipends and grants.  (KNN/ES)
