India's first Engineers Conclave begins, President calls for industry-institute partnership

New Delhi Sept 17 (KNN) The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the first Engineers Conclave-2013 here today and called upon the industry to develop close  partnerships with universities and research institutions to take this aspiration forward.

Organised by the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO),  Engineers Conclave is a new initiative which will annually provide a forum to discuss important national issues with respect to development in engineering science and technology, addressing policy issues for growth, requirement of faster pace of development, human resources etc.

The two themes for the Engineers Conclave-2013 are ‘Manufacturing of Aerospace systems’ and ‘Transforming Sundarban through engineering interventions’.

Stating that the two themes were both apt and timely, the President said that he looked forward to transformation into practical reality of the ideas being germinated at the conclave. By virtue of our achievements in multiple fields, he said that India stood poised to emerge as a leading nation in the 21st century.

The innovation capability of scientists and engineers will play a critical role in enabling India achieve this goal. People should be at the heart of the engineering effort, reaching out to human resources, consumers and vendors, he said. 

Further, “Innovation is a key managerial strategy for growth. We must lay emphasis on its various dimensions such as process innovation, product innovation, business model innovation and new technology innovation. Strong capabilities in designing and building machine tools are particularly critical,” said Mukherjee.

He stressed that in our country, a large population lives in villages and there was need for specific technology innovation for rural areas. 

Significantly, “The National Manufacturing Policy, 2011 has envisaged the creation of 100 million additional jobs in the manufacturing sector by 2025. It is expected that share of manufacturing in GDP will increase to 25 per cent by 2022. To make Indian Industry productive and competitive, we must enhance our capabilities on many fronts, primarily human skill, hardware technology, and knowledge base,” he said.

The Engineers Conclave will be organized jointly by INAE with DAE, DOS, DRDO and CSIR on rotation basis.

Through this Conclave, to be held from September 17-19, INAE and DRDO aim to identify contemporary problems in India and suggest suitable technical solutions to these problems to policy makers, NGOs and the industry. (KNN/SD)
