New Delhi, Jun 11 (KNN) Textile MSMEs across India are increasingly adopting rooftop solar solutions to address rising electricity costs, improve operational efficiency and strengthen long-term competitiveness, according to Tata Power.
Textile Sector Faces Rising Energy Cost Pressures
India's textile industry contributes over 2.3 percent to the country's GDP and supports more than 45 million jobs, making it one of the largest manufacturing sectors. However, increasing power tariffs and supply disruptions have become major operational challenges for many textile units.
Textile manufacturing hubs such as Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Surat and Ludhiana rely heavily on uninterrupted electricity for spinning, weaving, dyeing and finishing processes.
As production volumes increase, energy costs account for a significant share of operating expenses, directly affecting profitability and productivity.
Rooftop Solar Emerging As Cost-Reduction Solution
According to Tata Power, the industry's predictable daytime power consumption makes rooftop solar a viable option for reducing energy costs and improving cost stability.
The company estimates that textile MSMEs can reduce electricity expenses by 30 to 70 percent through rooftop solar installations, with typical payback periods ranging between three and five years.
Solar adoption also provides protection against future tariff increases and generates savings from the initial billing cycle.
Financing Models Supporting MSME Adoption
Despite the potential benefits, businesses often face challenges related to capital expenditure, rooftop infrastructure constraints and maintenance requirements.
Tata Power noted that financing options and structured repayment models are helping MSMEs adopt solar systems without significant upfront investment.
Advanced Solar Technologies Improve Efficiency
The company also highlighted the use of advanced solar technologies, including TOPCon and bifacial modules, to optimise energy generation while accommodating factory infrastructure requirements.
To address operational concerns in textile environments exposed to dust, lint and humidity, solar installations increasingly incorporate anti-soiling modules, corrosion-resistant structures and preventive maintenance systems.
In addition, hybrid solar systems integrated with battery storage are being deployed to ensure uninterrupted power supply for critical machinery, reducing dependence on diesel generators and minimising production disruptions.
Sustainability And Export Competitiveness Benefits
Beyond cost savings, rooftop solar is helping textile manufacturers improve operational reliability and support sustainability objectives. Export-oriented firms are facing growing expectations to comply with environmental and sustainability standards, including global certification frameworks and ESG requirements.
Tata Power noted that solar adoption can enhance sustainability credentials while improving attractiveness to international buyers and sourcing partners.
Long-Term Financial Gains Strengthen Business Case
The company further highlighted financial benefits such as accelerated depreciation provisions, lower taxable income and long-term savings over the lifespan of solar assets, which typically exceed 25 years.
They believe rooftop solar is increasingly being viewed by textile MSMEs not merely as an alternative energy source, but as a strategic investment that supports cost control, operational resilience and future business growth.
