New Delhi, Jan 6 (KNN)  Glass beads in various hues, a handicraft that originated in the rural areas of Varanasi, also called kaanch ke moti will soon receive a geographical indication status, according to a media report.

According to a Times of India report, the Geographical Indication Registry of India has agreed to certify the handicraft which comprises earrings, bracelets and necklaces made of glass beads.

Following an application made last year by export promotion commissioner, department of small scale industries and Banaras Glass Beads Association, an acknowledgement has been received and the GI certificate is likely to be awarded around March.

The report went on to say that more than 5000 artisans in Varanasi, Mirzapur and Sonbhadra are involved in the manufacture of thousands of varieties of glass beads in various shapes, sizes and colours.

Geographical Indications of Goods are defined as that aspect of industrial property which refers to the geographical indication referring to a country or to a place situated therein as being the country or place of origin of that product. Typically, such a name conveys an assurance of quality and distinctiveness which is essentially attributable to the fact of its origin in that defined geographical locality, region or country.  (KNN Bureau)
