Centre’s notification to ban production of Silver Leaf-Chandi Warq, Delhi HC puts a hold

New Delhi, July 31 (KNN) In a relief to the thousands of Micro and Small units that are involved in the making of silver leaf, popularly known as Chandi Warq (used for decorating sweets), the Delhi High court has put a  hold on the Central Government’s notification that banned the manufacturing  claiming it uses animal origin matter.

Talking to KNN, Sanjay Mittal, President of Delhi Chandi Warq Association (DCWA) and founder of Kailash Chand Warq Wala, informed about the latest development in the case.

Earlier the central government issued a notification banning the production of the handmade Chandi Warq on the basis of rumours that it uses animal matter that may lead to diseases. Following which the traditional silver leaf industry that has several units in Delhi and Moradabad were on the verge of closure.

“The government wanted only the machine made silver leaf making industries to exist, whereas our traditional industry engages more number of people, especially the women. With the notification, lakhs of labours that are working in the micro units faced threat of unemployment” said Mittal.

He further informed that there is absolutely no threat to anyone’s health because of the involvement of intestine as equipment used in the making of warq. In fact similar process is deployed in the making of many organic products and unani medicines.

With a hold on the notification by the Delhi High Court, the industry is back on track, he informed.

The Delhi HC earlier this week stayed the Centre’s notification in response to a PIL. It has also asked the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to submit their report in the matter. (KNN/ DA)
