New Delhi, Jul 30 (KNN)  The MSME Ministry is proposing an initiative to strengthen sectoral industry associations at the grass root level so that they can be used by the government to reach out to a large number of micro, small and medium enterprises.

“We hope to use industry associations to reach out to their constituents; we are looking at strengthening the associations after benchmarking them.  We do hope we shall be able to benchmark and use them,” Secretary in the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Madhav Lal said at a KNN event here last week.

He said that while the manufacturing has to be stepped up and its contribution to the country’s GDP must increase from the present level of 15-16 per cent, the MSMEs have a definite role to play in this regard.

One of the difficulties for the government, according to him, is to reach out to as many as 40 million enterprises, producing 6000 products and employing six crore people.

“The big challenge is how to reach out to them; how to get feedback (when) certain needs may arise in times of natural calamity, etc,” the Secretary said.  (KNN/PC)
