New Delhi, Feb 28 (KNN)  More than 300 handicraft products from different categories, developed by artisans and master craft persons are now on display at the newly opened Handicrafts Design Gallery here.

The unit which is a one stop sourcing point to customers and buyers for design led Indian handicraft products was inaugurated recently by Union Minister of Textiles, K S Rao.

The Design Gallery which is the first of its kind in the country to showcase design led products is likely to boost the sales of these products and will provide additional livelihood to the artisans and entrepreneurs of the Indian Handicraft sector, according to a release.

It will be a launching pad of innovative and new designs developed by designers in the clusters, during the various design development projects / workshops of the office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts).

The opening of the facility coincided with the distribution of improved tool kits of art metalware, woodware and cane and bamboo to national awardees by the Minister of Textiles.

The improved tool kits were developed by National Centre for Design and Product Development with the help of technical experts.  The tools are likely to improve the manufacturing process.

Over 500 master craft persons, artisans, national awardees, shilp gurus, handicrafts exporters, and officials attended the event.

While the improved tool kits were distributed to more than 30 national awardees from different clusters such as Moradabad, Saharanpur, Agartala, Delhi, Rewari (Haryana), Jaipur, Jodhpur, Hoshiarpur, Kullu (Himachal) etc. on pilot basis; further distribution of tool kits to more than 300 artisans at the clusters is in the offing.

Rao commended the handicrafts fraternity for the initiative towards transforming the centuries old handicrafts sector into a modern and technology up-graded industry with sustainable supply chain management.  He emphasized the need for encompassing the 3Ts concept in the handicrafts sector which involves  improved Tools, Techniques and Technology.

He acknowledged the fact that the development and distribution of improved tool kits to the artisans was long overdue.

Also speaking on the occasion, Secretary, Textiles, Zohra Chatterji ascertained that the improved tools, technology and techniques in the handicrafts sector can also be incorporated in the Technology Up-gradation Fund (TUF) scheme of Ministry of Textiles for further improving the level of technology in the handicrafts sector.

She emphasized that in order to compete in the world market, the handicrafts sector has to adopt the latest techniques in the production as prevalent in the competitor countries such as China, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, etc.

She added that such an initiative will go a long way in improving the level of production process in the handicraft clusters.  The Textiles Ministry, she said, would provide all support in modernizing the Indian Handicrafts sector so as to provide more livelihoods to artisans and craft persons in the far flung areas.

According to Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, S S Gupta, the initiative will be made continuous and distribution of improved tool kits will cover more product categories and clusters and there will be continuous activity throughout the year for providing improved technology in the clusters.

With improvement in production process, the exports of handicrafts shall also be enhanced, Gupta said.

The Exports of Indian Handicrafts reached Rs 17970.12 crore during the financial year 2012-13 and registered an increase of 38.5 per cent in Rupee terms and 22.15 per cent in dollar terms over the previous year.
