New Delhi, Sept 24 (KNN)  The second Indo-German SME Forum served as an important platform for exchange of information among industry associations as well as small and medium enterprises on how they can cooperate and exchange experiences on innovations and clustering.

This was stated by Director, Private Sector Development, GIZ, Wolfgang Leidig, on the sidelines of the Indo-German SME Forum held in the capital city on September-22 and 23, ‘Cluster Internationalisation’ being the theme.

On the importance of clusters, Leidig said, “In clusters, it is all about improving the abilities of enterprises that are small and medium and even the micro.  When they are more productive, they are better able to compete in the international market.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day Speech in August 2014 called for a Make in India campaign, eager to make India a manufacturing hub.  Asked if this will induce more German companies to set up manufacturing units here, Leidig responded in the affirmative.

“I can well imagine that more German firms will come to India.  Already there are a lot of German small and medium sizes enterprises and not just the large corporate who are manufacturing here.  This is an invitation that everybody in Germany is going to hear about or read about and that might make them want to come to India.

On GIZ’s role, “We can offer them partners through our programme and clustering that we are doing right now.  That will certainly help,” Leidig said.

SMEs are an important element of the social fabric in Germany.  According to official data, around 99 per cent of all companies in Germany can be classified as micro, small or medium sized enterprises (MSMEs).  An engine of the economy, those MSMEs are an essential source of jobs, create entrepreneurial spirit and innovation, fostering competitiveness and employment.

According to Deputy Chief of Mission and Head, Department for Economic and Global Affairs, German Embassy, Martin Hanz, every second SME in Germany is doing international business; 30 per cent of green technology units are owned by SMEs; SMEs contribute to 60 per cent of employment and 84 per cent to vocational education.  As a result, unemployment rate is less than 10 per cent which is among the best in Europe.

GIZ jointly with the Office of DC MSME, the Ministry of MSME, SIDBI, the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce and its knowledge partner Sequa organised the first Indo-German SME Forum in 2013. The forum laid the foundation for a mutual partnership between German and Indian SMEs.

To continue this dialogue and to foster the development of an institutional mechanism the second Indo-German SME Forum was held.

The forum also seeks to support the formulation of institutional networking and joint cooperation projects and will be followed by formation of specific working groups - involving stakeholders from India and Germany.  (KNN/ES)
