K'taka industries demand concessions on freight charges for SMEs

“The Minister could have considered announcing some concessions specific to the SME sector, especially given the fact that the Railways are now carrying only 31 per cent of the total freight and are looking to improve its freight turnover, ” said KASSIA President Chidananda M Rajamane, reacting to the Railway Budget.
However, Karnataka Small Scale Industries Association (KASSIA) has welcomed the Railway Minister’s decision to set up a dedicated freight corridor and the vision to make the Railways the largest freight carrier in the world.
“This can boost the economy and have a positive effect on MSME growth. However the recent increase in freight charges could nullify this positive effect,” Rajamane said.
He also noted that the proposal to set up modern logistics parks, and warehouses for freight storage could spur industry growth.
“On the brighter side, the Budget had announced new rail connectivity on the Shimoga-Sringeri-Mangalore train route, doubling project for Mangalore-Ullal-Surathkal, a premium AC train between Kamakhya-Bengaluru, a daily passenger between Dharwad-Dandeli, Byndoor-Kasargod, Yeshwanthpur-Tumkur, MEMU services between Bengaluru-Ramanagaram, and DEMU services between Bengaluru-Nelamangala, and Yeshwanthpur-Hosur,” the association said in a press statement.
Though the budget had provided for 58 new trains, it had belied the expectations of high-speed trains from Bangalore to Chennai, Mysore and Mangalore, apart from improving rail connectivity from Hubli to Mumbai, and Bangalore, he said.
Measures such as facilitating connectivity to new ports via PPP, and making e-procurement compulsory would benefit the industry, he added.
Meanwhile, Mysore Industries Association (MIA) is disappointed with the Railway Budget as “Chamarajanagar-Mettupalyam Railway Service, upgradation of Mysore Railway Workshop, Formation of Sub Railway station in industrial Area are not shown place in the union Railway Budget.”
The announcement of Railway Medical College in Mysore is also not yet started, said the Association.
MIA however welcomed the announcement of Mysore-Bangalore Chennai High Speed Rail; Ramnagar-Bangalore Service for six days in a week; assurance to complete survey of Mysore Kushalnagar line; no hike in Railway fare etc. (KNN/SD)
