Kolkata, Sept 23 (KNN)  Along with challenging topography, the hilly north eastern states are besieged by infrastructure woes such as lack of connectivity, power and skilled manpower which have hindered industrial growth in the region said Union MSME Minister, Kalraj Mishra.

The MSME Minister said this during the 5th National Conference on MSME Financing and MSME Linkages held here recently, reports media.

He acknowledged the fact that most of the entrepreneurs in the region were mainly of the first generation and therefore required institutional support.  Further, most of the beneficiaries selected under the PMEGP Scheme during the last two years were yet to be assisted by banks, the report added.

Also speaking on the occasion, Nagaland Minister for Industries and Commerce, G Kaito Aye said that “the key to development of the North East region has to be infrastructure led growth.”

While pointing to problems of insurgency which posed a challenge to investments, he said the state with its abundant resources was safe enough.  Above all, he highlighted the fact that entrepreneurs in the region lacked credit facilities from banks.

Kaito called for MSME Ministry’s further assistance in sectors such as tourism, handlooms, handicrafts, agri sector, forest, bamboo, medicinal and aromatic plants, mineral resources and industrial infrastructure among others.

The MSME Minister, Kalraj Mishra is scheduled to visit the state in the next few months during which the Indian Chamber of Commerce, Kolkata is likely to organise a similar conference on MSME Financing and MSME Linkages there.  (KNN/ES)
