New Delhi, July 17 (KNN) Acknowledging that the MSME sector has not been given optimal assistance under export promotion efforts of the Government, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce has said adding that this is a poor share and the MSMEs must be given all necessary support to increase their participation in the export.

The Committee has recommended measures to the Department of Commerce under Ministry of Commerce and Industry, in its report, to boost exports from the MSME sector. Taking into account the recommendations made by the Committee, the Ministry of MSME has asked the Commerce Department to take actions in this respect on “Priority” basis.

The move comes at a time when the country’s exports have declined for the seventh month in a row. India's exports fell 15.82 per cent in June to USD 22.28 billion.

The Committee has said that it is of the view that “It is aware of the fact that less than 0.5 per cent of the MSMEs are exporting their products.”

The Committee would like to underscore the fact that if a meagre participation of less than 0.5 per cent by MSMEs translates into 40 per cent of the total exports then it can be well imagined that a little push for MSMEs into exports would catapult country’s exports into new heights, it said.

The Panel also recommended the Department of Commerce to take measures to make MSMEs competitive through support access to low cost credit for export, provision of land in SEZs and EOUs on discounted rates, facility for working capital, technology up gradation etc.

With this view, the Ministry of MSME has asked the Commerce Department to take necessary action on the recommendations made by the Parliamentary Committee.
“This should be accorded top priority,” said the Ministry.

Meanwhile, apex industry body for MSMEs, Federation of Indian Micro and Small & Medium Enterprises (FISME) had also raised the issues with the Committee. (KNN Bureau)
