New Delhi, Oct 10 (KNN) Barely 32 out of 277 Public Sector Units have complied with the mandatory 20 per cent procurement from the MSME sector, Union MSME Minister Kalraj Mishra has said.

Speaking at the 11th edition of Global SME Business Summit 2014 here yesterday, the Minister also said that the government would ensure that all the PSUs procure 20 per cent of goods form MSMEs.

"As far as procurement policy is concerned, only 32 PSUs have complied with the 20 per cent mandatory procurement out of 277 PSUs," said Mishra, as quoted in a media report.

The government is looking at amending public procurement policy to incorporate provisions against PSUs who fail to meet the mandatory at least 20 per cent procurement by April 2015.

Further, he reiterated that the government will revise the definition of MSMEs to provide for a higher capital ceiling.

"MSMEs should not face problem in getting bank loans. MSMEs will help in boosting the country's economy. The sector is the back bone of the country," he said.

Mishra mentioned about the various steps the government is taking, including helping start-ups to get easy loans and opening 500 incubation centres in the country, for boosting the sector.

"We have decided that we will run 500 incubation centres in the country. At present there are only 84 centres. I request the corporate sector to encourage people to open these centres. It will help in providing skills and employment to youths," said Mishra.

On the other hand, Secretary, Ministry of MSME, Madhav Lal, who inaugurated the event spoke about the dual role that the Ministry of MSME plays in assisting MSMEs in terms of providing them with a supportive framework through policy advocacy and by bringing about institutional reforms in areas of policy vacuum including taxation reform, regulatory systems’ reforms, finance provisioning reforms, etc.

Speaking about the initiatives to boost MSMEs, he said, “The most significant measures include the Make in India initiative, Skill India for skill development, Digital India for ICT interventions, etc.” (KNN/SD)
