Bengaluru, Jul 17 (KNN)  To promote clean technology innovations and entrepreneurship in selected small and medium enterprises in India, GEF (Global Environment Facility), MSME Development Institute, Bangalore and UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organisation), are organising a programme.

The one day programme on Clean Technology Innovation in SMEs will be held at the MSME-DI here on July-21.

The objective of the programme is to promote clean technology innovations and entrepreneurship acceleration programme.  It will focus on energy efficiency, renewable energy, waste to energy and water efficiency, an official notice from MSME-DI said.

In line with priorities of the government and UNIDO’s mandate to promote sustainable industrial development, there is an increasing realisation in the Indian SME sector about the need for clean technology adoption in industries so as to ensure fulfilment of committed goal of moving towards green growth.

Consequently, the GEF funded MSME UNIDO Cleantech Programme for SMEs was launched in New Delhi in May 2013.  It primarily aims at identification and promotion of clean technology innovations in SMEs.  The idea is to promote sustainable development and reduce carbon footprint by introduction of new innovative clean and efficient technologies in SMEs.

The project will help to promote SMEs that can innovate and develop commercially viable clean low carbon technologies that can be scaled up through adoption of business models.

A competition based approach will be used to identify the most promising entrepreneurs across the nation.  This platform will provide entrepreneurs and technologists the facilitation needed to launch and create successful and sustainable clean technology ventures and startups.

An eco-system approach will be followed whereby a common platform will be established; policy framework will be strengthened and local capacity will be built to forge close partnership between government, academia, business and various key stakeholders including NGOs.

The programme is focused on enhancing both emerging cleantech startups and the local entrepreneurial ecosystem and policy framework.  It will adopt an inter-disciplinary approach involving SME clusters, national ministries, academia, industrial association, state governments, partner agencies and autonomous research centres in the country and abroad to promote best practices for innovative technologies in selected industrial clusters across the country.

The Cleantech approach and methodologies adopted under the project will build on the UNIDO’s Green Industry initiative to promote sustainable industrial growth.

The cleantech project will focus on linking innovators to investors with a long term vision of making all SMEs in India energy efficient through the adoption of clean technologies by 2025.

The programme is conceived and developed by the Ministry of MSME in cooperation with UNIDO, FICCI and other industry chambers and associations.

It has three key components – setting up a national level platform to promote clean technology innovations and competitiveness of SMEs and business models that can deliver global environment benefits; building national capacity for primarily clean technologies and development of a supportive local entrepreneurial system; and strengthening the policy and institutional framework for scaling up investments and commercialisation of clean technologies in SMEs.  (KNN/ES)
