Two schemes for women in MSME sector

New Delhi, Aug 6 (KNN)  Ensuring financial inclusion for women entrepreneurs, the Ministry of MSME implements two schemes for women in the country engaged in the MSME sector, including those from the rural, backward and coastal areas including Tamil Nadu, namely Mahila Coir Yojana (MCY) and Trade Related Entrepreneurship Assistance and Development (TREAD).
 
“Coir Board implements the Mahila Coir Yojana which provides self-employment opportunities to the rural women artisans. The scheme envisages distribution of motorized ratts to women artisans after giving training for spinning coir yarn,” said Union Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Kalraj Mishra in the Lok Sabha today.
 
The number of women trained and funds provided by Coir Board under Mahila Coir Yojana was: in 2011-12 (7750 women, subsidy Rs 14.73 lakh), 2012-13 (8386 women, subsidy Rs 8.76 lakh), 2013-14 (8086 women, subsidy Rs 14.24 lakh) and 2014-15 (1354 women upto July 2014), as per official data.
 
In addition, the Office of Development Commissioner (MSME) implements a women-oriented scheme  named Trade Related Entrepreneurship Assistance and Development (TREAD) which envisages economic empowerment of illiterate and semi-literate women through trade-related training, information and counselling extension activities related to trades, products, services etc.
 
The Scheme provides for loans through NGOs who are also provided Government of India grant for capacity building. This Assistance is provided for self-employment ventures by women for pursuing any kind of non-farm activity.
 
The grant provided and number of women benefited under TREAD Scheme during 2011-12 was 7862 women (grant – Rs 121.55 lakh); in 2012-13 - 11,168 women (grant Rs 118.79 lakh); in 2013-14 - 5455 women (grant Rs 233.39 lakh).  No grant has been provided so far in the current year.
 
Besides, the Ministry of MSME through Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has been implementing a credit-linked subsidy programme named Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) from 2008-09 for generating self-employment. Under PMEGP, special category beneficiaries including women are provided margin money subsidy at a higher rate of 35 per cent in rural areas and 25 per cent in urban areas as compared to 25 per cent and 15 per cent respectively for general category.
 
The number of projects by women entrepreneurs assisted, along with corresponding utilization of margin money subsidy under PMEGP during last three years and current year is: 2011-12 (14,299 projects, Rs 32165.29 lakhs); 2012-13 (13,612 projects, Rs 29,386.99 lakhs); 2013-14 (5845 projects and Rs 17,177.56 lakhs); 2014-15 upto July 31, 2014 (544 projects and Rs 1647.61 lakhs).
 
While PMEGP is specifically meant for setting up micro-enterprises in the non-farm sector and Mahila Coir Yojana for coir industry, TREAD is for any kind of non-farm activity. (KNN/ES)
