Govt Sets Up Footwear Testing Lab In Ghaziabad To Boost Quality Infrastructure To Support MSMEs

New Delhi, May 18 (KNN) A specialised footwear testing laboratory has been established at the National Test House in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, aimed at strengthening quality infrastructure for one of India's most labour-intensive manufacturing sectors, according to a Ministry of Consumer Affairs press release.

The facility offers comprehensive testing across multiple footwear categories in accordance with relevant Indian Standards, and is strategically located near major footwear manufacturing clusters to ensure faster turnaround times and cost-effective access for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), exporters, manufacturers, and regulatory agencies

Reducing Dependence on Overseas Certificatio

A key objective of the laboratory is to reduce India's reliance on foreign testing and certification facilities for export-bound consignments.

Global buyers increasingly demand consistent compliance with technical standards, and the absence of accessible domestic testing infrastructure has historically been a bottleneck for Indian exporters.

The new facility is expected to shorten lead times and help producers meet stringent domestic and international benchmarks, improving their competitiveness in quality-conscious global markets

Aligned with Make in India and Viksit Bhara

The initiative aligns with the government's Make in India programme and the broader Viksit Bharat vision, both of which emphasise manufacturing self-reliance and the development of a robust quality assurance ecosystem.

By providing testing and certification support along the value chain — from product safety and reliability to export compliance — the laboratory is positioned to enhance consumer confidence and drive quality improvements across the sector

India is seeking to consolidate its standing as a global manufacturing destination, and quality infrastructure is increasingly being viewed as a prerequisite for achieving that goal.
