New Delhi, Feb 24 (KNN) In line with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s push for high quality local manufacturing and Make in India campaign, the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) and Quality Council of India (QCI) are jointly working out a ‘ZED maturity model’ which is expected to be finalised within a month.

Deriving its name from Prime Minister’s speech ‘zero effect zero defect’, the purpose is to help SMEs progress and grow by providing them with sufficient training and funding to move up the value chain, sensitise them to the importance of packaging, branding leading to quality products with zero defect, hence zero rejection. The process will involve manual skilling, technology upgrade and automation, among others.

The enterprises will be assigned star ratings on a scale of 1 to 5 based on various levels on 61 parameters.  Further, there will be categories for each parameter ranging from bronze to silver, gold and diamond, bronze one star being the lowest rating, and diamond five star the highest. Infrastructure, quality of machines, waste disposal system, provisions to deal with smoke and fuel uses are some of the parameters for rating. To be considered at par with an international unit, the enterprise will have to make it to the diamond level.

With sector specific parameters for assessment for each industry, enterprises will be encouraged and hand held to adopt clean technology to attain sustainable growth trajectory.

For performance assessment of SMEs, Japan Plus team, a group set up by India to promote investment proposals from Japan will be called in along with the World Bank and MSME ministry which will likely provide the funding for the model.

With an aim to make ‘Brand India’ synonymous with “zero effect, zero defect” manufacturing, over the next three to five years, the government plans to rate and handhold one million small and medium enterprises. (KNN/SS)
