APEDA Strengthens Bihar Makhana Exports Through First Sea Shipment to Canada

New Delhi, Jul 31 (KNN) The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) facilitated the first sea shipment of value-added flavoured Makhana from Darbhanga, Bihar, to Canada on July 29, 2026. The consignment comprised 7 metric tonnes packed in two containers.

The shipment was dispatched through Mundra Port to ZKV Foods, Canada. The flavoured Makhana was processed and packaged by Nutrivin Agro Private Limited in accordance with applicable international quality and food safety standards.

The consignment was flagged off in the presence of APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev, along with officials from APEDA, the agriculture department, ICAR Research Complex for Eastern Region, exporters and other stakeholders associated with the Makhana value chain.

Bihar is the largest producer of Makhana in India. The crop is also known as fox nuts and is among the state's major agricultural products. The shipment involved value-added flavoured Makhana for the Canadian market.

According to the information provided, Makhana farmers associated with the shipment realised more than 50 per cent higher returns through value addition and access to international markets compared with conventional channels.

APEDA is working with state governments, exporters, Farmer Producer Organisations, processors and other stakeholders on export infrastructure, quality compliance, market linkages and value addition for agricultural products.
