New Delhi, Jul 30 (KNN)  The Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) in its mission to improve and strengthen social and environmental performance has taken the initiative to conduct capacity building programmes for the small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

The programme called ‘Disha’ which comes under the ‘Scheme for development and implementation of AEPC- Common Code of Conduct (AEPC CCC) for the Garment Industry’ (Ministry of Textiles) seeks to recruit programme facilitators, coordinator and officers to implement the project.

Disha is aimed to facilitate and prepare the Indian apparel industry, especially, small and medium enterprises, towards becoming more socially and environmentally responsible.

The AEPC CCC helps to build capacities of Indian apparel manufacturers to adopt management systems for addressing human and environmental challenges at their factories, and unify for mutual cooperation, global alignment, and resource optimization.

Under the project, AEPC is supporting voluntary participation of apparel manufacturing factories towards sector specific AEPC CCC, to set benchmarks for the Indian apparel industry, and provide capacity building programmes to the apparel manufacturers and exporters in India.

AEPC will organize regional level trainings in order to qualify and certify qualified experts and prepare them to offer their expert services at affordable prices to large, medium, small and micro enterprises for improving social and environmental policies, processes, procedures, and practices.

The main objective of Disha is to have a globally recognized and conducted AEPC code of conduct based on applicable Indian laws and regulations. It aims to build capacities of apparel factories to establish and implement a management system for AEPC CCC implementation and promote a process-based certification system to measure the progress.

The code of conduct prohibits child, bonded and forced labour, prohibits discrimination and prevents harassment and abuse, regulates hours of work and wages etc.  (KNN/SD)
