Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Announces Comprehensive Programme for Vegetable and Fruit Sector in Budget 2025-26

New Delhi, Feb 1 (KNN) In the Union Budget 2025-26 presented on February 1, 2025 Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a significant initiative to bolster vegetable production and supply chains across India.

The government plans to develop large-scale clusters for vegetable production near major consumption centers. This strategy aims to enhance the efficiency of the vegetable supply chain, ensuring fresher produce reaches consumers more swiftly.

To implement this initiative, the government will collaborate with Farmer-Producer Organizations (FPOs), cooperatives, and start-ups. These partnerships will focus on various aspects of the supply chain, including the collection, storage, and marketing of vegetables.

By leveraging the strengths of these groups, the government aims to create a more streamlined and effective distribution network for horticultural produce.

This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance agricultural productivity and support farmers. The budget also outlines plans to promote natural farming practices, with a target to initiate one crore farmers into natural farming over the next two years.

Additionally, the government will undertake a comprehensive review of the agricultural research system to focus on raising productivity and developing climate-resilient crop varieties.

The establishment of vegetable production clusters is expected to not only improve the availability and quality of produce for consumers but also provide farmers with better access to markets, reducing post-harvest losses and increasing their income.

By promoting FPOs, cooperatives, and start-ups, the government aims to foster innovation and entrepreneurship in the agricultural sector, contributing to the overall growth and sustainability of India's economy.
