Rs 189.79 Crore Ginger Mission Launched To Strengthen Mizoram’s Agricultural Economy
New Delhi, May 14 (KNN) Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya M. Scindia and Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma launched the Rs 189.79 crore Mizoram Ginger Mission, a convergence-led initiative aimed at strengthening ginger cultivation, processing, value addition and exports in the state.
Anchored by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), the mission has been developed in collaboration with the Ministries of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Rural Development and Food Processing Industries, along with NABARD, ICAR, APEDA and private sector stakeholders.
The initiative focuses on building an integrated value-chain ecosystem for Mizoram’s GI-certified pharma-grade ginger varieties, which are known for their high oleoresin content and export potential.
The project aims to address post-harvest losses, improve farmer value realisation and strengthen global market access for Mizo ginger.
During the launch event, Secretary, MDoNER, Sanjay Jaju outlined the implementation framework of the mission and highlighted the need for a convergence-based approach to bridge price gaps and improve utilisation of premium ginger varieties.
Speaking at the event, Scindia said the mission reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “whole of government” approach towards agricultural value-chain development.
He said the initiative is designed to ensure that farmers become active stakeholders in the entire value chain from cultivation and processing to branding, packaging and exports.
The Union Minister highlighted that Mizo ginger contains 6–8 per cent oleoresin, significantly higher than the global average of around 3 per cent, but farmers currently receive only Rs 8–15 per kilogram despite international value chains reaching over Rs 500 per kilogram.
He said the mission would focus on four strategic pillars — convergence, value addition, branding and market integration — while aiming to integrate nearly 20,000 farming households into a unified traceable supply chain ecosystem.
According to the Ministry, the project includes one integrated processing hub, three spoke centres and more than 30 strategic interventions covering processing, quality assurance and export readiness.
The mission also aims to position Mizo ginger in Southeast Asian, Middle Eastern and European markets while supporting sustainable rural livelihoods and farmer-led value creation across the state.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma said the initiative marks an important step in transforming Mizoram’s agricultural economy by creating structured opportunities for farmer prosperity, value addition and global market integration.
