Assistance to laid-off textile workers to continue

“The TWRFS scheme has benefitted 12002 workers in 2007-08, 8408 workers in 2008-09, 6658 workers in 2009-10, 2854 workers in 2010-11, 1279 workers in 2011-12 and 520 workers in 2012-13 (April-January 2013),” the Minister of Textiles, Anand Sharma said in a written statement in the RajyaSabhayesterday.
Assistance under the Scheme is payable to eligible workers after the mill is formally closed, for the purpose of enabling them to settle in another employment.
The Scheme according to an official notification has been reviewed in consultation with stakeholders including representatives of the textile industry, State governments, representatives of trade unions; and recommendations for larger coverage of the scheme have been incorporated in the draft revised scheme for the 12th Five Year Plan.
The revised scheme provides for enhanced coverage and simplification of implementation procedures.
A survey conducted by the Labour Bureau under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, showedthe highest increase in employment in the textiles sector (including apparels) where it had increased by 0.50 lakh compared to the previous quarter. However, March 2012 quarter was 0.The job losses in the textiles sector from Dec 2011 to Mar 2012 was due to closure of textiles mills.
