India EV Sales Hit 3.28 Lakh Units In July, Up 66% YoY: FADA

New Delhi, Aug 10 (KNN) India’s electric vehicle (EV) transition reached a significant milestone in July 2026, with retail sales touching an all-time high of 3,27,901 units—marking a growth of over 66 per cent year-on-year (YoY), according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).

This surge means that nearly one in every eight vehicles sold in the country was electric, highlighting accelerating consumer adoption across segments.

Strong Growth Across Vehicle Segments

FADA highlighted that the growth was broad-based, with all major segments recording higher EV penetration.

Two-wheelers crossed 2 lakh units for the first time, achieving an 11.2 per cent market share, while three-wheelers maintained dominance with a 65.1 per cent share, making EVs the default choice.

Passenger vehicles grew 83 per cent YoY to reach a 7.9 per cent share, and commercial vehicles nearly tripled their penetration to 3.57 per cent. This trend indicates that electrification is expanding beyond niche segments across the entire mobility ecosystem.

Structural Shift in India’s Auto Market

FADA noted that the transition to electric mobility is no longer a future projection but a present reality. The data reflects a deeper structural shift in consumer preferences, supported by improving affordability, financing access, and expanding product availability.

Additionally, external factors such as potential volatility in global oil prices—linked to geopolitical developments—may further push consumers toward EV adoption.

Record Overall Auto Retail Performance

July marked a historic month for the auto industry, with total vehicle retail sales reaching 25.9 lakh units, up nearly 26 per cent YoY, and every major segment recording its best-ever July performance. EV penetration also rose to around 12.7 per cent from 9.6 per cent a year earlier, highlighting strong demand across both urban and rural markets.

Outlook Remains Positive

Dealer sentiment remains optimistic heading into the festive season, with over 74 per cent expecting growth in August and nearly 88 per cent anticipating expansion over the next three months.

With supportive factors such as improved rural cash flows, stable interest rates, policy push for electrification, and upcoming festive demand, India’s EV and auto markets are expected to maintain strong momentum in the near term.
