Chennai, May 3 (KNN)  In order make the manufacturing sector more competitive, industry body Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is planning technology centres for the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector in the southern region.

'Accelerating growth with conscious competitiveness' is the theme for the year as announced by CII.

“As part of the CII’s national agenda, we intend to bring back competitiveness as an agenda for this year as country’s manufacturing sector, particularly MSME (micro, small and medium enterprise) sector has slipped on that factor in the past four years.  We will actively engage with state manufacturing competitiveness councils to facilitate growth of the MSME sector,” Chairman, CII – southern region (SR) B Santhanam said here.

According to him, south India's contribution to the entire GDP stood at a USD 252 billion, which is over 25 per cent.

CII’s agenda would be to address infrastructure inadequacy, bridge skill gap, create a system for transparent governance, develop competitiveness and ensure inclusive growth.

Santhanam said the MSME sector needed to be more competitive by addressing technology inadequacy through common R and D facilities, testing centres and skill resources shortage through automation.

The CII has also proposed the setting up of a technology development centre for robotics/automation and technology development for addictive manufacturing in two cities of the south.

The region, he said, would engage with state manufacturing competitiveness council to facilitate growth of the sector, advocate water policy at state levels, and conduct study on the roadmap for creation of southern gas grid.

“It is also important to take advantage of the country’s strength in additive manufacturing. Currently the world’s largest additive manufacturing test facility is in China for aerospace sector. Cities like Coimbatore and Bangalore have been suggested to house these centres,” he commented.

Raising concern about the power situation in the southern states, he said, Tamil Nadu was slowly coming out of the crisis with a better medium outlook but the real difficulty would be in Andhra Pradesh which is experiencing a situation similar to that of Tamil Nadu a year ago.

Further, to promote art and culture, Santhanam said the first edition of the Festival of South India would be organised in Hyderabad in November. (KNN)
