New Delhi, May 16 (KNN) The coir industry in the country has recorded fair growth in the last three years despite the tough time existing at the global market, Giriraj Singh, Minister of State for Micro Small and Medium Enterprise said recently.

The Minister further said that the industry registered a high of Rs2, 282 crore, which is 55 per cent more than the exports last year. The export weight 9,57,044 metric tonnes in terms of quantity this year.

Talking to KNN, Mahesh Kumar, President, Coir Pith & Allied Products Manufacturers & Exporters Association said that the figures indicate a positive growth in the industry.

He further said that the prime reasons behind the COIR industry being able to do good is the rising demands of organic fertilizers everywhere In the world. Talking about US, he said that The United States alone import more than 12000 containers of organic compost from India, followed by Holland and other countries.

Another reason for good exports he said was the demand of fibre which is being catered by the Indian COIR Industry .There is huge demand for raw fibre which is used to make a variety of consumer products. For better manufacturing of the fibre there is an inevitable need to upgrade the technology of the industry said Kumar

Kumar also raised concerns over the figures that may come in the following year as the production this year was hit badly due to severe water crises in the region. (KNN/ DA)
