Private Firms to Help Build India’s Next Generation Fighter
New Delhi, May 28 (KNN) India has taken a significant step towards bolstering its defence capabilities by approving a new execution model for the development of its indigenous fifth-generation stealth fighter jet, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).
This initiative, sanctioned by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, opens the project to private sector participation alongside the state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
Traditionally, HAL has been the sole entity responsible for fighter jet production in India.
However, the new model allows private companies to bid independently, form consortia, or collaborate with foreign original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to participate in the AMCA project.
This move aims to accelerate the development and deployment of the AMCA by leveraging the broader capabilities of India's aerospace industry.
The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), will lead the project and is expected to issue an expression of interest (EoI) soon to invite industry partners for the development phase.
The AMCA is envisioned as a twin-engine, 25-tonne stealth fighter jet equipped with advanced features such as supercruise capability, advanced avionics, and stealth technology.
This strategic shift comes amid growing regional security concerns, particularly with China's military support to Pakistan.
By involving private industry in high-tech defence manufacturing, India aims to enhance self-reliance in defence technology and strengthen its military capabilities through innovation and collaboration between public and private sectors.
The inclusion of private firms is expected to not only expedite the AMCA project but also foster a robust domestic aerospace ecosystem, aligning with India's broader objectives of achieving self-reliance in defence manufacturing and reducing dependency on foreign military imports.
