Apple Boosts Sustainability Efforts In India With Renewable Energy, Recycling Plans
New Delhi, May 7 (KNN) Tech giant Apple has announced various sustainability initiatives in India focused on renewable energy expansion, plastic waste reduction and support for green entrepreneurship as part of its goal to achieve carbon neutrality across its operations, supply chain and product lifecycle by 2030.
Rs 100 Crore Renewable Energy Investment
As part of the initiative, the company will invest an initial Rs 100 crore in renewable energy infrastructure in partnership with CleanMax. The investment is expected to create over 150 MW of additional renewable energy capacity, enough to meet the annual electricity needs of nearly 1.5 lakh households.
According to Apple, the partnership is aimed at accelerating renewable energy adoption across its supply chain in India. The two companies have previously collaborated on rooftop solar projects powering Apple’s offices and retail outlets in the country.
Waste Management And Recycling Expansion
The company is also expanding its waste management initiatives through a partnership with WWF-India to strengthen recycling and material recovery systems and reduce plastic leakage into the environment.
The initiative builds on Apple’s existing collaboration with Saahas Zero Waste in Goa and will now be extended to additional regions, including Coimbatore.
The model focuses on creating traceable systems for collecting, sorting and recovering recyclable materials while improving local waste management infrastructure through partnerships with municipal bodies, waste workers and local communities.
Support For Green Startups
In addition, Apple has partnered with Acumen to support six early-stage startups working in waste management, circular economy solutions, regenerative agriculture and sustainable livelihoods.
The programme will provide grants, mentorship and technical support to help the startups scale their operations.
Among the ventures highlighted by the company are Saptkrishi, which develops low-cost cold storage solutions for farmers, Yotuh Energy, which is developing electric refrigerated transport systems, and MOWO Fleet, which focuses on electric mobility opportunities for women entrepreneurs.
The announcement follows the release of Apple’s Environmental Progress Report, which stated that the company has reduced global greenhouse gas emissions by over 60 percent compared to 2015 levels while continuing to expand its operations.
