India Achieves 50% Non-Fossil Fuel Power Capacity, Ahead of 2030 Target: Minister Puri

New Delhi, Sep 22 (KNN) India has reached a key milestone in its energy transition, achieving 50 percent of installed power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, five years ahead of its 2030 target, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said at a recent industry event.

Speaking at an energy sector event, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri highlighted that India is producing energy at record levels, driven by diversification of supply sources, according to a IANS report.

“India is producing more energy than ever before… With the rapidly growing demand for energy, India has diversified its energy sources. Earlier, we imported from 27 countries; today, we import from 40 countries," said Puri.

India has prioritised energy security, boosting domestic production while diversifying imports to meet rapidly growing demand. 

Green hydrogen has emerged as a strategic focus, with 862,000 tonnes of annual production capacity allocated to 19 companies and 3,000 MW of electrolyser manufacturing capacity approved for 15 firms.

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi lauded the achievement as a major step toward sustainable growth and energy security. 

“In a world seeking climate solutions, India is showing the way,” he said, crediting the early milestone to the government’s proactive policies and clean energy investments.

India’s total installed power capacity now stands at 484.8 GW, with 242.8 GW coming from non-fossil fuel sources. 

The early attainment of this target underscores the country’s commitment to meeting its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and accelerating the transition toward a greener, self-reliant energy sector.
