Renewable Power Generation Jumps 30% YoY, Reaches 19.9% Share In July: Grid India

New Delhi, Aug 31 (KNN) Renewable energy accounted for nearly 20 per cent of India's total power generation in July 2026, reflecting the country's growing shift towards cleaner energy sources.

According to Grid India data, India generated 1,81,790 MW of electricity during the month, of which 36,355 MW came from solar, wind and biomass-based renewable sources. 

This represented 19.9 per cent of total generation, up from 16.9 per cent in July 2025.

Renewable Generation Rises Over 30 percent

Renewable power generation increased by more than 30 per cent year-on-year, rising from 27,835 MW in July 2025 to 36,355 MW in July 2026.

A Power Ministry official said the increase reflected the country's efforts to transition from fossil fuels towards cleaner energy sources, reported Times Of India.

India has set a target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070. Renewable energy now accounts for more than 42 per cent of the country's total installed power capacity of around 552 GW. 

Including nuclear and hydropower, India's installed non-fossil fuel capacity has reached approximately 295 GW, the official said.

Thermal Power Continues To Dominate

Despite the rise in renewable generation, thermal sources, including coal and lignite, continued to provide the bulk of India's electricity, accounting for around 66 per cent of total generation in July.

Thermal generation was about 13 per cent higher than a year earlier, underlining the continued role of conventional power sources in meeting India's baseload electricity requirements.

Peak power demand crossed 270 GW in July for only the second time, driven by hot and humid weather conditions across the country and the El Nino phenomenon.

Hydropower Share Declines

Hydropower accounted for 10.2 per cent of total power generation in July 2026, down from 14.5 per cent in the corresponding month last year.

Except for gas and hydropower, all major fuel sources recorded year-on-year growth in electricity generation during the month.
