Material Recycling Association Flags Safety Gaps in Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling

Ghaziabad, Feb 20 (KNN) With lithium-ion battery recycling projected to reach a market size of USD 1 billion by 2025, experts warn that without robust safety measures, the industry could become a hazard for both workers and the environment.

The Material Recycling Association of India (MRAI) has called for immediate reforms, including stringent safety protocols, regular audits, and the adoption of global best practices.

“Responsible recycling is crucial to protect the lives of workers as much as the planet,” said Pramod Shinde, Head of Communication at MRAI.

He emphasised the need for collaboration between industry, academia, and the government to ensure safe recycling practices.

Industry leaders are also urging the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to issue clearer guidelines on the safe storage, transportation, and disposal of used lithium-ion batteries.

“Lithium-ion batteries pose fire hazards, but the lack of clear regulations leads to unsafe practices, especially in the informal sector,” said Gaurav Dolwani, CEO of LICO.

The incident has also highlighted the risks faced by workers in an industry that often lacks adequate oversight.

Pratyush Sinha, Vice President of LOHUM and a member of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Committee on battery recycling, stressed the importance of implementing safety standards across the entire battery life cycle, particularly at the end-of-life stage.

Bhuwan Purohit, Whole-Time Director at Rubamin, called for stronger workplace safety norms and regular audits to prevent such tragedies. “Safety must always come first, especially in industries dealing with hazardous materials,” he said.

As India positions itself as a global leader in battery recycling, stakeholders stress that worker safety and environmental protection must be prioritised to ensure sustainable growth in the sector.
