DPIIT Launches Nationwide Import Reliance Mapping Drive
New Delhi, Feb 25 (KNN) The Government of India has initiated a comprehensive exercise to map import reliance across key sectors, an effort aimed at strengthening domestic manufacturing and reducing dependency on foreign supplies, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) said.
Under the initiative, DPIIT will compile a list of commonly procured goods where local manufacturing capacity is limited or absent. The data will come from all ministries and departments, enabling the government to estimate the scale and pattern of imports for these goods.
A consolidated five-year procurement plan will then be developed to boost local production and focus policy support where it is most needed, reported The Economic Times.
Identifying Gaps in Manufacturing and Procurement
Officials noted that the exercise will help pinpoint vulnerabilities in India’s manufacturing base and inform strategies to enhance self-reliance, particularly in sectors where import dependence is high.
The move aligns with broader efforts under the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat agendas to strengthen domestic production and limit external supply risks.
As part of the process, departments will also contribute inputs on raising local content thresholds for key items. Discussions are underway to explore whether the Government e Marketplace (GeM) could play a role in demand consolidation by linking import codes to procurement categories.
Trade Context and Procurement Reform
The mapping exercise gains further significance as India opens approximately 40,000 high-value central government procurement contracts under recent trade agreements with partners such as the UK and UAE, allowing foreign bidders to participate through government procurement portals.
Suppliers from these countries will be granted ‘national treatment’ subject to local content rules, underscoring the importance of strengthening domestic supply capabilities.
Policy Implications
By identifying import-dependent areas and developing domestic procurement plans, policymakers aim to reduce reliance on foreign goods where local manufacturing is feasible, enhance supply chain resilience, support industry strategy and competitiveness and align procurement policy with broader trade and industrial reforms.
Economists say the initiative, once completed, could shape future manufacturing incentives, tariff policies, and diversification strategies to make India’s production ecosystems more self-sustaining.
