Govt unveils 2,600 crore package for leather and footwear industry

New Delhi, Feb 2 (KNN) Eyeing at providing boost to the leather sector comprising of a fair share of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the country, Commerce and Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu unveiled the central government’s 2,600 crore package for leather and footwear industry.

The package was approved recently by the Union Cabinet last month aiming towards employment generation in leather and footwear sector sanctioning the amount for the next three financial years.

Prabhu unveiled the package during the inaugural event of the 33rd India International Leather Fair (IILF).

Prabhu in his address during the event said that with the package in place, the government has set the target of generating over 3.24 lakh new jobs in the sector.

Also the package is to prove instrumental towards formalisation of over two lakh jobs in the next three financial years.

Further, the government is to set up mega leather, footwear and accessories clusters and also provide the required support in this regard, Prabhu said.

Commenting over the recent trends indicating decline of exports, Prabhu said that the government is in full form to help exporters re-engage in the global market and the industries in the country must be ready to embrace and become part of the global supply chain. (KNN/DA)
