International agency to check tea cultivator infringement rights

The government has appointed an international agency to check the misuse of the Darjeeling tea brand in other countries.
 
“Thomson and Reuters has been appointed to monitor and alert the Tea Board regarding any attempt made by any entity to register the Darjeeling word mark and logo mark in any country,” said Minister of State of Commerce and Industry,  D Purandeswari  in RajyaSabha today.
The Tea Board, in the past, has fought more than 15 cases regarding the misuse of the Darjeeling name in Sri Lanka, the US and France among others.
Darjeeling Tea is protected as a certification trade mark in the US while the brand is a collective mark in Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Spain, France, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland, (former) Yugoslavia, Egypt and Lebanon, according to the Tea Board.
It is also registered as an official mark in Canada and as a trademark in Japan and Russia.
From April 2012 to January 2013, Darjeeling tea exported 3.5 million kgtea worth Rs 210 crore.
