Shri Wattal who hails from Kashmir foresees a bright future for the carpet industry and is hopeful of achieving the export target of US Dollars 1260 million fixed by the government, according to a press release from the Carpet Export Promotion Council.
Indian handmade carpet industry is highly labour intensive and provides employment to about 2 million workers directly and indirectly in the rural areas, especially women, in their homes and is spread all over the country.
With over 35 years of experience in the Carpet trade, Wattal is one of the country’s leading exporters of handmade carpets and other floor coverings.
He has been an executive member of the All India Handicraft Board, Board Member of CAPART (Ministry of Rural Development) and is presently on Board of IICT and is also convener of Delhi Exporters Association.
Wattal has represented the Indian carpet industry at various forums at national and international levels. He was a leader of the delegation to South Africa and a member of high level delegation to USA, representing the Indian handmade carpet industry for deliberation with US Government on the issue of Child Labour.
He was also a member of Indian trade delegation to Canada, representing Indian carpet industry.
With his experience and leadership qualities, the Indian Carpet Industry feels he would be the right person to lead the carpet industry.
Needless to say, he would have many challenges before him, the most crucial being the restoration of interest subvention, development of clusters for training of carpet weavers and providing financial assistance to small and medium exporters for participating in national and international fairs and exhibitions through CEPC.
