National Handloom Designers' Conclave 2026 Highlights Design-Led Innovation & Market Growth

New Delhi, Aug 11 (KNN) The Ministry of Textiles organised the National Handloom Designers' Conclave 2026 at Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi, to discuss design-led innovation and product development in the handloom sector.

The conclave was organised by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handlooms) and brought together policymakers, fashion designers, textile experts, academicians, cluster designers, master weavers, exporters, retailers and other stakeholders.

Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, Neelam Shami Rao, Development Commissioner (Handlooms) Dr. M. Beena, Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) Amrit Raj and DDG, Ministry of Textiles, Akhilesh Kumar were among those present at the event.

An exhibition of shortlisted products from the National Handloom Design Contest 2026 was organised during the conclave. The products were developed through design interventions across nine handloom clusters from eight States.

The participating clusters included Miranchak, Purba Bardhaman, Vanitha, Dev Bhoomi Bharari, Dwarka, Khurkul, Ridrol, Imphal East and Kondapalakala, representing nine handloom clusters from eight States

Addressing the conclave, Neelam Shami Rao said the handloom sector provides livelihoods to more than 35 lakh people. She also highlighted the Ministry's 29 Weavers Service Centres and 357 Handloom Cluster Development Programmes.

She said 80 design-potential clusters were taken through a structured design process during the year, with around 80 designers engaged to work with the clusters.

Dr. M. Beena said design interventions can help improve the value and competitiveness of handloom products and emphasised collaboration between designers and weavers to respond to changing market requirements.

The National Handloom Design Contest 2026 prize ceremony was also held at the conclave. Awards were presented in the Apparel, Home Furnishing, Craft Revival and Jury's Special Recognition categories.

The event featured three panel discussions covering design innovation and market competitiveness, sustainable cluster development and the future of Indian handlooms, and design thinking for value creation. Participants discussed consumer trends, sustainability, branding, exports and technology integration.

The exhibition displayed handloom products developed through structured design interventions and designer-weaver collaboration across the selected clusters.
