Mumbai, Jul 21 (KNN) Textile Exporters have asked the government to prevail upon China to cut import duty on textiles to five per cent from ten per cent at present.

If the import duty is halved, textile exports can be increased by USD 7 billion from the present USD 3.5 billion, members from Texprocil (The Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council) have said, according to reports.

Earlier, the council of textile exporters met with representatives of Chinese National Textile and Apparel Council, asking them to convince their government to halve import duty, only to be told that the Indian Government should approach the Chinese Government directly on the matter.

Chinese National Textile and Apparel Council is an apex body that advises the Chinese Government on matters pertaining to textile policy.

India’s trade deficit with China is USD 32 billion.  While imports worth USD 12 billion from China are allowed duty free or at low interest rates, the same is not reciprocated by the neighbour.  (KNN Bureau)
