New Delhi, Feb 3 (KNN) The Government of India is implementing a range of schemes and initiatives aimed at the holistic development of the country’s textile and handloom sector, covering the entire value chain from raw material production to manufacturing, skilling, branding and market access, said Minister of State for Textiles Pabitra Margherita.

In written reply to a question in Lok Sabha, the MoS said that key initiatives to promote the sector include PM Mega Integrated Textile Regions and Apparel (PM MITRA) Parks Scheme, Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for man-made fibre apparel and technical textiles and National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) focusing on research, innovation, market development, skilling and export promotion.

Silk Samagra-2 programme has been rolled out for the comprehensive development of the sericulture value chain while SAMARTH is aimed at capacity building in the textile sector.

For the handloom and handicrafts segments, the government is implementing the National Handloom Development Programme, Raw Material Supply Scheme (RMSS), National Handicraft Development Programme (NHDP) and the Comprehensive Handicrafts Cluster Development Scheme (CHCDS) which provide end-to-end support to weavers and artisans.

Under the handloom schemes, financial assistance is extended for raw material support, technology upgradation through improved looms and accessories, solar lighting units, workshed construction, product diversification and design innovation.

Support is also provided for branding and marketing through initiatives such as the India Handloom Brand (IHB), Handloom Mark and GI tagging.

The minister further stated that need-based skill upgradation training is being conducted for handloom workers in Uttar Pradesh, including Deoria and Ballia districts, under the SAMARTH scheme through Weavers’ Service Centres in Varanasi and Meerut and the Indian Institute of Handloom Technology, Varanasi.
