"Permitting FDI will facilitate foreign investors to compete for such mega projects, either on their own or by joining hands with domestic investors. This in no way leads to privatization of existing Indian Railways network or its core activities," Gowda said while inaugurating the 59th annual railway national awards function here.
"At the cost of repetition, it is made clear that the existing Indian Railways network, its operations and its core activities will remain with the Indian Railways only and not open for privatisation."
Foreign capital in railways was not allowed earlier. In August, the government had approved a proposal to allow 100 per cent FDI for building railways infrastructure.
Speaking at a function organised to felicitate railwaymen for outstanding service here yesterday, Gowda said that Railway officials should “open their eyes and ears to the suggestions, complaints of passengers” and also suggested some passenger-friendly measures.
He also said that the General Managers and Divisional Railway Managers should send monthly note on what they feel is the impression of passengers and what they want.
He asked them to travel at least once a month by trains for its full journey in their zones and send him reports. (KNN/SD)
