US Almonds and Pistachios Dominate Indian Market as Imports Soar

New Delhi, Feb 12 (KNN) The United States has established a commanding presence in India’s dry fruit market, much like China’s dominance in global electronics.

American almonds alone account for nearly 93 per cent of India’s imports, valued at over USD 1 billion in the past year. Similarly, 84 per cent of India’s pistachio imports come from the US.

A surge in health-conscious consumers and rising incomes has fuelled the demand for dry fruits in India. However, domestic production remains insufficient to meet the growing need.

According to the US Department of Agriculture, India’s almond production for the 2024-25 season (August-July) is estimated at 4,150 tonnes, while imports are projected to reach 1.9 lakh tonnes.

Since 2008, almond imports have soared over 5.5 times, while pistachio imports rose from 4,400 tonnes in 2008 to around 13,500 tonnes in 2021.

“There is greater consciousness to eat healthier food, and promotional campaigns are driving this trend,” said Sumit Saran, India representative of the American Pistachio Growers and Washington Apple Commission.

From aggressive branding to competitive pricing, American dry fruits have secured a firm place in India’s retail landscape.

The Californian almond variety is now more common on e-commerce platforms and store shelves than Indian-grown almonds. India has become the largest market for California almonds.

“Strong marketing campaigns have helped American almonds secure over 80 per cent of India’s market share. Lower import duties have also boosted their business,” said Mohit Singla, chairman of the Trade Promotion Council of India.

While Australian and Chilean suppliers are making inroads, American suppliers benefit from better logistics and a well-organized supply chain. Meanwhile, US authorities are pushing for more concessions on pecan nuts and parity with Australian almonds.
