Rae Bareli Emerges As MSME Hub As Modern Coach Factory Boosts Industrial Growth
Lucknow, Oct 21 (KNN) Rae Bareli is witnessing an industrial transformation driven by railway coach manufacturing, the expansion of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and fresh investment proposals, with the Modern Coach Factory (MCF) at Lalganj emerging as a key growth driver.
Modern Coach Factory Records Highest-Ever Production
MCF recorded its highest-ever annual production of 2,126 coaches in FY26, up from 2,025 coaches in FY25. The factory also completed its first Vande Bharat trainset, expanding its role in India's passenger coach manufacturing sector.
Established with a planned annual capacity of 1,000 coaches, MCF produced its first fully manufactured coach in August 2014. Production subsequently increased from 140 coaches in FY15 to around 1,425 in FY19, before crossing 2,000 units annually in recent years.
Railway Expansion Boosts Local MSMEs
The factory's expansion has generated demand for engineering components, electrical equipment, fabricated structures, cables, furniture, logistics and maintenance services, creating opportunities for local enterprises, reported Times Of India.
Railway procurement data cited in the report shows that purchases from local Rae Bareli units increased from less than Rs 1 crore in FY14 to around Rs 124 crore in FY19. Total procurement from MSMEs reached Rs 667 crore during FY19.
New Industrial Estates And Investments Planned
The Uttar Pradesh government is also planning new MSME-focused industrial estates across the state, with Rae Bareli among the districts identified for expansion. The programme envisages 15 industrial zones across 11 districts, covering around 765 acres and offering 872 industrial plots.
Industrial investment is also expected to support the district's growth. In December 2025, the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet approved investment proposals worth Rs 15,189.7 crore for 12 mega and super-mega industrial units across nine districts, including Rae Bareli.
Manufacturing Growth To Generate Jobs And Diversify Economy
The expansion of manufacturing and ancillary industries is expected to create opportunities in logistics, warehousing, construction, transport and other services, while broadening the district's economic base beyond agriculture.
MCF has also increased demand for engineers, technicians, welders, electricians and other skilled workers, creating opportunities for local skill development.
The emerging industrial ecosystem is positioning Rae Bareli as a manufacturing and MSME centre, with railway production, local suppliers, skilled labour and new investments contributing to its economic diversification.
