Amma announces new schemes for Tamil Nadu’s handloom, textile, khadi, handicraft sectors

Chennai, Sep 21 (KNN) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has announced several schemes for handloom, handicraft, textile and khadi industries.

Jayalalitha said the government would procure twister and doubling machines, comber machines and open end spinning machines at the cost of Rs 14.20 crore for six cooperative mills in the state.

These six cooperative mills have been modernised at the cost of Rs 175.23 crore. They manufacture threads for the government’s free dhoti and saree scheme and free uniform scheme to school children.

She said as many an 1,500 people were employed in the 1,357 handloom and powerloom cooperatives.

 Jayalalithaa said 50 per cent subsidy would be provided towards the insurance premium of powerloom workers. It would be provided by the weavers cooperative societies.

The state chief minister, popularly known as Amma, assured to take steps to boost ‘Poompuhar’ for which an Integrated Development and Promotion of Handicrafts scheme would be launched.

The Centre would provide Rs 17.14 crore, and the State government would provide Rs 3.24 crore for this scheme.
