Assembly Elections: Amma, Didi, Sonowal……and MSMEs

New Delhi, May 19 (KNN) Surely, it’s a day to cheer for Amma and Didi for retaining their powers in their turfs. Though BJP has failed to make it in other states, it is rejoicing its victory in north eastern state of Assam after 3 terms of Tarun Gogoi. Meanwhile, with Left only left with Kerala, Puducherry is the only cheer for the Congress.

Counting of votes in the Assembly elections of four states and one union territory began at 8 am on Thursday.

Down in south, AIADMK supremo J Jayalalitha not only had a historic win, but she will become the first Chief Minister in 32 years to be voted back to power in Tamil Nadu. Amma thanked the decisive voters after her massive victory. AIADMK has 122 seats, DMK 104, DMDK+ has 1, BJP has 0.

It has also been a historic win for Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal. After securing the massive mandate, Didi appealed for peace and asked the opposition to learn from this experience. TMC fighting alone has in fact increased its seat share in the state. TMC has taken away 212 seats as of now leaving 31 seats with Left+, 43 with Congress, 7 with BJP and others 1.

Meanwhile, in Congress’ once considered turf Assam, BJP has taken 85 seats, Congress 25, AIUDF 12 and Others 4. Assam has become the first north-eastern state where BJP has won. BJP’s making  Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal from Majuli(ST) as the chief ministerial candidate has surely helped the party in its historic win.

In Kerala, 46 seats are with UDF, LDF 92 has won with 92 seats, BJP has won the first ever assembly seat in the state, while others too have 1.

In Puducherry, AINRC has won 10 seats, AIAIDMK 3, DMK-Congress 15 and others 1. Puducherry is the only state to cheer about for Congress as of now.

Meanwhile, KNN spoke to MSME associations across the states to know their views on the election results:

R C Joshi, Chairman, Federation of Industry & Commerce of North Eastern Region, said, “We respect the mandate of people. Whichever the new Government comes to power, we want faster economic development of Assam. So that it can stand up with rest of the country. We have already lost lot of time. We expect Government to formulate a policy for industries and implement them too. We would also like to submit economic agenda for the new Government.”

“We respect the Government which people elect. We are not politically inclined or declined. Yes the Congress Government had done work but that was not up to the mark. In the scenario of 2000, much had been done. We will give full support to the new Government. We expect the double digit growth of the Assam industries,” Joshi said.

C Mathusami, President, Tamil Nadu Small and Tiny Industries Association (TANSTIA) said, “We are satisfied with the results but we expect good support from the Government particularly for the MSMEs. Global Investors meet and other things which she had already promised must be fulfilled. We hope MSMEs will get f attention now. Results indicate that she has done good work during the floods. But for the MSMEs it was quite late. However, she has given whatever TANSTIA requested.”

“We expect transparent and good support for the MSMEs. We also support bringing GST. I think all MSMEs have a lot of schemes available from State and Central Government, the schemes should speed up,” he added.

Suparno Moitra, Secretary General, Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry said, “We are very happy with the news because industry always looks for the continuity. I am sure the CM is going to concentrate creating infrastructure for the Industry.”

“It is without doubt that people have voted her to power with such a mandate. It goes on to show that people have restored faith on her. So I think the first five years was for her to understand. She concentrated on certain aspects to find out how to do things. I think these five years, she is going to really concentrate on taking Bengal to create a hub.”

It is not correct to say that Left had not done much for the state; initially they did good works when they came to power. But later they lost track and could not keep the pace what had happened. If Mamamta Banerjee follows the same footsteps as CPM had been doing, then people would vote her going out from power, he added. (KNN Bureau)
