Bio-tech incubation centre at IIT Guwahati

Guwahati, Jun 10 (KNN)  An incubation centre will come up under the aegis of the Guwahati Biotech Park, presently located at the IIT Technology Complex in the capital city of Assam.

Guwahati Biotech Park, the first of its kind in Northeast India, is a visionary project launched by Government of Assam to promote business in biotechnology and allied areas through entrepreneurship development, particularly in the North-Eastern part of the country.
 
It is expected that the park will help in faster penetration of biotechnology industries to this region there by uplifting the overall socio-economic scenario.
 
The mission of the Guwahati Biotech Park is to work as a platform of technological innovation and to provide sustainable linkage between industry, research institutions and academia to boost the region's competitiveness and business attractiveness.
 
Among the objectives are to promote biotechnology, entrepreneurship, industrial growth; provide business support, technology transfer, analytical instrument facilities; state-of art infrastructure incubation centre.
 
The Biotech Park will also provide space for industrial growth in the area of biotechnology; identification and sourcing of new technologies; technology scale up facilities at affordable cost; and facilities for production of GMP grade material for pre-clinical and clinical trials.
 
As a first endeavour of the Park`s activities, an Incubation Centre namely Guwahati Biotech Park Incubation Centre (GBPIC) has been established through a tripartite agreement among S&T Department, Government of Assam, DBT, GOI and IIT Guwahati. The incubation centre is supported by DBT, GOI with a major financial grant and is established in the temporary campus of 20,000 sq.ft. area within the IIT Guwahati premises.
 
For development of the Guwahati Biotech Park, a land measuring 85650 Sqm has been supported by Government of Assam in Amingaon, North Guwahati.
 
The Guwahati Biotech Park Incubation centre would house facilities for Bioprospecting, Medicinal Plant Extraction; Fermentation; Micro propagation; Food Processing / Testing; Central Analytical Instrumentation; Modular labs, etc.
 
The Biotech Park is now holding a design competition for preparation of the concept design from reputed Architectural /Consulting firm to carry forward the project (Development and Construction of Guwahati Biotech Park Incubation Centre at the permanent campus) This is a national, open, two-stage design competition.

Biotechnology has been globally recognized as a rapidly emerging technology which plays a key role in growth and development of the nation. In India, biotechnology is among the fast growing knowledge based sectors. It has been considered as a powerful enabling technology that can revolutionize agriculture, health care, industrial processing and environmental sustainability.   (KNN/ES)
