Chennai, May 5 (KNN)  After making a surprise visit to a hallmarking centre here and finding irregularities, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has asked that the centre be closed with immediate effect, citing unethical practice.

The centre will be permanently closed, according to media reports.

Authorities from the standards bureau had come across 42 kgs of gold jewellery of which 12.6 kgs was spuriously hallmarked.

It began with a random inspection two months ago, when BIS as a part of its market surveillance exercise had taken jewellery from a licensed jewellery house and had it examined at a BIS referral lab, to find that it was under caratage.

However, the licensed jeweller hallmarked by the A-1 Hallmarking Centre when asked to stop hallmarking activities, continued doing so.  This according to BIS is considered ‘unethical practice.”  (KNN/ES)
