Chhattisgarh Mandates 10-Year Power Planning For Discoms

Raipur, Apr 25 (KNN) The Chhattisgarh government has introduced a long-term resource planning framework for the power sector, mandating distribution companies (discoms) to prepare integrated plans covering a 10-year horizon.

The move is aimed at ensuring reliable power supply, optimising resource utilisation, and supporting the state’s transition towards a more sustainable and efficient energy mix.

Focus on Renewables, Grid Stability and Efficiency

Under the new framework, discoms will be required to undertake comprehensive demand forecasting, assess supply-side resources, and align procurement strategies accordingly.

The planning exercise will factor in conventional and renewable energy sources, enabling a balanced approach to meeting future electricity needs.

The regulation seeks to strengthen power sector governance by promoting data-driven decision-making and improving coordination across generation, transmission, and distribution segments.

It also aims to reduce supply-demand mismatches, enhance grid stability, and ensure cost-effective power procurement.

A key focus of the framework is the integration of renewable energy into the grid. Discoms will need to account for variability in renewable generation and incorporate appropriate balancing mechanisms, including storage solutions and flexible power sources.

Transparency, Investment and Future Readiness

The initiative is expected to improve transparency and accountability in the sector, as utilities will be required to periodically review and update their plans based on changing demand patterns, technological developments, and policy priorities.

Industry experts believe that such long-term planning will help attract investments in infrastructure, support capacity addition, and facilitate the adoption of clean energy technologies. It also aligns with broader national goals of energy security and decarbonisation.

With rising electricity demand and increasing penetration of renewables, the 10-year planning mandate marks a significant step towards building a resilient and future-ready power sector in Chhattisgarh.
