Chennai floods a body blow to MSMEs in Tamil Nadu already hit by raw material hike

Chennai, 12 Nov (KNN) MSMEs in Chennai have been badly hit due to the heavy rainfall in the region this week.

The torrential rain add woes to the consistent rise in prices of raw materials which small industries are already struggling with.

KNN reached out to K.R. Thangaraj, President of Tamilnadu Small & Tiny Industries Association (TANSTIA) to report on this matter.

He expressed concern for the state of micro enterprises as they are unable to enter the units owing to the flood.

“Medium enterprises are still managing the situation, but in some units the machines are drowned which will result in massive production fall,” said Thangaraj.

It has been noted that labourers are also finding it difficult to reach the work, and some units have reported drowning of finished goods.

Thangaraj also pressed on the issue of rising prices of raw materials and export containers which are impacting the MSMEs largely.

He said that the Central Government needs to look beyond financial assistance and control the rate of raw materials which are extremely essential for the sector as 40 percent of MSMEs are affected by this surge.
